Yaya (Nanny) by Florinel Dela Cruz
Nanny, a job that requires much patience and understanding.
A job that requires sacrifice for the family left in the country of your birth
A job that requires attention for the sake of your ward,
Nanny! Waking up early to take care of them.
Then coming home from school even doing the homework is left to you
It also warms the heart when they get good results in their exams
Nanny! A job that is not easy.
A job that is painful because you take care of another person’s child instead of your own.
A job that requires you to also make them feel your love
Tiring but you won’t give up for the sake of your dream to have a little prosperity in life. Nanny, a job that is not for long-term.
So let’s choose to be a good influence for them.
A time will come when we have to leave them.
And only memories of them we will bring with us.
Even though I’m a nanny in their eyes, I feel love and made them feel that I love them.
About the Poem: "My poem is all about being a nanny abroad. This is a kind of job that sometimes you will just cry because while you’re taking care of someone’s child you suddenly will think of your child who is far from you. While you are feeding your ward you will suddenly think of your child if they have also already eaten. In spite of all this, we need to love our job as nannies who take care of others’ children. Sometimes we won’t even notice that we already love them especially since we raised them. What we cannot do for our own child, we can do for them. It’s a bittersweet feeling because you can see and raise them well while you see your own child who longs for your care. This is the biggest sacrifice as a nanny/helper who is far from the family. But we need to work far away for the future of our children to give them a good future. So being a nanny is not easy. The sad part of being a nanny is when the time comes that your service is no longer needed and we need to leave their home. Sad but it’s reality."
