Rising from Shadows

I grew up with parent’s, not my own,
In a house where love, felt like a stone,
Their smiles were mask, their kindness a guise,
Yet in silent nights, I felt the lies.
When I faced a darkened fate,
In silence, I carried the weight,
Abused by the ones who should protect,
My heart hollow, my spirit wrecked.
I hid this truth from my family,
With my real mother, I spoke freely,
But when, I shared my pain,
Of the trials, the hurt, the disdain.
Bound by the chains, of our poverty,
Living in the land, who’s stoled my purity,
It pained me to see her helpless,
Living in the world of loneliness.
Yet my dreams, refused to wither,
In the midst of sunny weather,
In shadows cast, my spirit soared,
For in my heart, love’s light restored.
When the time, a lucky child was born,
In life’s struggles, I felt so worn,
Searching for work, I had to depart,
Leaving my child, asleep at heart.
I made a tighted choice,
To leave my homeland, to find my voice,
As a migrant worker, I took the chance,
In Hong Kong hustle, I learned to dance.
Though fortune was scarce at the start,
Here I stand, with hope in my heart,
Gradually reaching for the star’s shine bright,
In the vast sky, I find my light.

Jonesa Basa. Uñada
My name is Jonesa Basa. Uñada, I am 34 years old and have one child. I have been working in Hong Kong for almost 7 years as a Migrant Domestic Worker. I came from the land of Philippines, which has 7,641 islands, perfect for tourists and locals. Only in the Philippines do we love to sing anywhere with karaoke! 😍 One of the Filipino traits that I shared in my role as a Migrant Domestic Worker is being caring, loving, respectful, hardworking, disciplined, and even when facing difficulties, I continue to fight with the help of God. My top priority is my connection with God and savings goals, for a life I aspire to have with my family.
